After a long time researching and a long time of saving, I bought the digital DJing device, The Torq Xponent so I could recapture those days of live mixing. But I ran into a lot of problems getting it up and running. First off, the software wasn’t compatible with my version of my operating system, so I spent months trying to figure out how to get the thing working. Add to that, bad cables and bad serial number the activate the software and the Xponent seemed to be more trouble than it was worth. Luckily, I found out I could ditch the Torq software and use (what seems to be) the superior Native Instruments Traktor Pro. So everything seems to be ok. And then a buddy of mine got the Vestax Spin. She’s still running it through the paces and getting a feel for it. The transition from real turntables to a portable system can be difficult. But just looking at it makes me feel I might’ve made the wrong purchase. Time will tell..

Somewhere in-between mainstream Hip-Hop, and Indie/Backback, there’s a number of artists carving their own niche in Hip-Hop. If you’ve heard of artists like Madlib, Lamb and AFTA-1, then chances are you’d heard of Flying Lotus. Free from the confines of MTV and Clear Channel radio, these cats are taking elements from other forms of creativeness and rewriting the book on dope music.

I was first exposed to the ‘Lotus Sound’ in the form of those intermission beats in-between the shows on the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim set. After scrambling for weeks trying to find more information and music, I managed to get my hands on his 2006 release, 1983. Somewhere in that grey area where industrial music and hip-hop mesh, Flying Lotus managed to craft this unusually infectious sound coupled with bombastic, over modulated drumbeats. I was instantly hooked.
