You Should Be Listening To: Kristopher Newday

February 16, 2010 Artist, Music No Comments

Perhaps, the first and only thing that comes to mind when you ponder notable music hailing from Baltimore is soul/pop group Dru Hill. But this is a new day in music! In fact, up-and-coming producer, musician, and vocalist Kristopher Newday is prepared to embody just that mantra and re-tune your ears away from the mediocrity that dominates the present airwaves. While building his personal portfolio of tracks for a 2010 Mixtape, Newday is currently desirous of building his network with other artists and producers (hit him up at kristopherjdmurrell@gmail.com ). One notable collab in the works is with Hiphop/Soul artist Black Spade.

Inspired by ethereal sound masters like J Dilla and Nicolay, Mr. Newday brings you a few musical appetizers to whet your soul. (for more, visit http://www.youtube.com/user/KristopherNewdayTV)

“Say I Do” resonates with a 9th Wonder – styled rolling beat and sample play, to the extent that the beginning of the track has you anticipating a Little Brother track.  And yet Newday’s vocals pour over the beat like maple syrup.  Did I say smooth? See for yourself.

“2 Women” is actually a free style of sound and vocals…yes sometimes Mr. Newday is a ONE TAKE WONDER when the spirit moves him!  The track is reminiscent of the true music heads who are still driven by their craft and not the $…although with his talent, it’s coming!

Album Of The Moment: Sade – “Soldier Of Love”

February 1, 2010 Artist No Comments

A new Sade album is more of an ‘event‘ than just a record release. For those of us who first got enthralled 26 years ago with their debutDiamond Life, the time between Sade albums got farther and farther apart as the years went on. The longest time we had to wait was an 8 year stint between Love Deluxe and Lovers Rock.. But we, their core fans stayed vigilant. We re-listened to that timeless catalog over and over, hoping that someday soon, word would come down from the heavens that they were bringing us, yet  another marvelous collection of love and loss. This time, we had to wait a full decade (live and remix albums don’t count!!!) for Soldier Of Love. And to be honest, The wait was well worth it. Sade delivers another set of tracks that we’ll fall in love with and replay until our ears start to cry.

On a side note, I’d love to know what type of Hyperbaric Chamber Helen Folasade Adu is using to keep herself looking so young. I swear the woman looks the same as she did twenty years ago. Sorry.. back to the album.

Soldier Of Love seems to be an extension of Lovers Rock. That’s not a bad thing. It’s actually an excellent feeling. Sade doesn’t seem to re-invent themselves, but tweak their sound just enough to feel current. While everyone seems to try and cram as much music into the 70-minute disc, Sade always seem to put out a short list of the best songs they have to offer. None of this throw everything we have at the consumer, more is better crap. They always seem to pick the right amount of songs to tell a story.

All in all, this CD does not disappoint. The only complaint is that it’s too short. I understand that quality is king with them. But after a decade, maybe 12-15 songs would be a nice reward for the wait. In any case, I don’t know anyone who isn’t gonna scoop this up on Feb. 9th, 2010. Let’s just called Sade Day and celebrate by making Soldier Of Love a platinum-selling album in it’s first week!

You Should Be Listening to: T.J. Brown

You Should Be Listening to: T.J. Brown

TJ Brown is one of the first artists I connected with on MySpace. A song she had out. “Groove” had gotten stuck in my head and was in heavy rotation in my mixes at the time. So when she hinted that she wanted to use a song I have done for a upcoming project, I jumped at the chance. I was fortunate to be included on her debut “Loves’ Design” in 2007.  Today, the 15 cut opus still holds up, which is a testament to The Soulstress’ voice. If you get a chance, check out “Loves’ Design” on iTunesCDBaby.com and MySpace.com. You won’t be disappointed.  — Big La

Born Tanya Jenine Brown, TJ was raised on the south side of Chicago IL She studied music in high school and Voice in college. Her Favorite memory of music was singing at her afterschool program for the teachers there. TJ says “I was nervous but I remember feeling like I could fly and do anything… and when I discovered I had a double gift from god and I could write the feeling was “indescribable” TJ has been singing and songwriting all her life but professionally got into music while doing session work for other artists and decided to pursue her singing. She has been doing this for ten years going to various producers trying to find her own unique sound.

At the release of her album “Love’s Design” she has done interviews on “OUT THE BOX” with Tim Dillinger and on Honeysoul.com with Vonnie Woods. TJ has still managed to do all of this and write for RAMEL’s CD “Closure” including his hit song “Back in the Day” What is so distinct about her style? “I maintain the smooth …..I love sexy romantic music…I am a soul descendent of the past and a student of it as well. Although she sings TJ loves to song write just as much. “If I wasn’t singing or got more into my writing and being behind the scenes I would be just as content with that. However, it doesn’t mean I lack drive.” TJ Brown expresses her love of music through her music and she says “No one should settle for something that they don’t want to do in life…sometimes sacrifices are made but you should do what you love and love what you do…and I love music!”
