Flying Lotus “Cosmogramma”Posted on Fri, Jun 18, 2010
Somewhere in-between mainstream Hip-Hop, and Indie/Backback, there’s a number of artists carving their own niche in Hip-Hop. If you’ve heard of artists like Madlib, Lamb and AFTA-1, then chances are you’d heard of Flying Lotus. Free from the confines of MTV and Clear Channel radio, these cats are taking elements from other forms of creativeness and rewriting the book on dope music.
I was first exposed to the ‘Lotus Sound’ in the form of those intermission beats in-between the shows on the Cartoon Network‘s Adult Swim set. After scrambling for weeks trying to find more information and music, I managed to get my hands on his 2006 release, 1983. Somewhere in that grey area where industrial music and hip-hop mesh, Flying Lotus managed to craft this unusually infectious sound coupled with bombastic, over modulated drumbeats. I was instantly hooked.
