Artist Spotlight: Slum Village

I remember my boy T-Bob asking me " Yo Kid! You ever heard of Slum Village?". I was like "Yeah. I don't like 'em." Well, I was tripping. I was thinking of Group Home (which still is a trip cause i listen to them now and flip how dope the beats were!!). Eventually I heard 'Get Dis Money' and flipped out. It was one of the dope grooves I'd heard in a long time and it brought back my faith in hip-hop. From there, I went of a rage looking for any and everything Slum Village track i could find. And now, they're one of my favorite groups out now.

They've gone through a bunch of roster changes. The most heart-wrenching being J Dilla's departure. But they still seemed to bring the heat. And now with Jay Dee back in the fold (sort of), Slum Village is poised to 'finally' make an impact. You don't believe me? Peep the hits, son. Peep the hits...

Yo I feel you on SV. They maybe one of the most underrated groups in hip-hop. I was put on to SV when I as going to college at UofMichigan in Ann Arbor (about 30 mins for da D). Last week they dropped a mixtape called Prequel To A Classic, and its vintange SV. I've been feelin' for a long time. My favorite SV joint would have to be the collabo w/ Common titled "Thelonious" that beat is cold.

Ah, this is right up my alley. I remember back in the day when Slum Village was just an underground group in Detroit and now they're known worldwide. I love it when my Detroit peeps get recognition.

I can't believe you didn't like SV. Dag. That group was one of my faves back in the day when they came out. I'll try not to hold it against you. Bout time you did an arby too man. It's been too long.

I've been feeling SV as much as anyone, but I can't help thinking their chance to blow has passed. Having Kanye on the "Selfish" single" was supposed to be the final push they needed but apparently they are now without the major label deal. Despite all this, they often as this playlist demonstrates drop some heat. The only other track I'd like to see on this list is "Star" off Trinity, which i believe was produced by Waajeed from PPP.

Man, I have been on SV from way back. They started out in Fantastic Vol 2 with nice grooves and some of the best beats that I had heard in a while (my fav being Players and Thelonius) With the personnel changes and slight style changes I think they might have taken a step back. But back in the more than capable hands of Dilla, Im sure their next effort will again show why I flipped for them from the get go. For those that dont know, check out J88 and Detroits Best Kept Secret for more of their original sound. Great stuff. I was even able to come across their originally bootlegged LP Vol 1. Nice stuff. Go and listen...
